Unemployed visit display day

Hundreds of unemployed Christchurch people on Thursday visited a special display day aimed at helping them find out what social services are available in the city. The day was organised by the Employment Network as a practical way to help unemployed people, said a network spokeswoman, Ms Karen Moses. Unemployed people needed more information than how to look for a job — they needed to know how to live on a low income, she said. Those involved in organising the day said about 800 people turned out to see the 12 displays

in the Horticultural Hall. The displays included advice on budgeting, housing, training, recreation, and receiving social welfare benefits. Ms Moses said she regarded the day as “really successful,” mainly because of the positive feedback received. A booklet called the “Hitchhikers Guide to Unemployment in Christchurch” also proved popular. About 300 copies were given away. The booklet, compiled by Ms Moses on behalf of the network, contains practical advice to unemployed people about getting benefits and using Christchurch services.
