PAPER CHEMISTRY Applications are invited for two scholarships to study for a Ph.D. or M.Sc. in the Department of Chemistry from an early date in 1988. The projects offered will involve collaboration with a local paper manufacturer in one of the following areas: i) The organic chemistry of pulp extracts. ii) The surface chemistry of pulp fibres. iii) The physical structure of different types of paper. Applicants should have at least a good Honours degree in Chemistry or its equivalent in appropriate industrial experience. Research thrusts in the Department are focussed on two major themes: (a) Physiological factors controlling growth of fruit, nursery and flower plants is a major programme being led by Professor D. J. Chalmers. The objectives are to manipulate plant growth to optimise productivity of a range of important horticultural crops. (b) Extension of shelf life and maintenance of quality by manipulating the postharvest storage and transport environment, based on physiological understanding of the behaviour of com- i mercially significant horticultural products, is a major objective of the research programme being led by Professor E. W. Hewett. A wide range of field plantings and physiological equipment is available to implement these pro- , grammes. 1 The successful applicants will be expected to ' undertake post-graduate studies within these broad - programmes.
