The statutory function of the Department is to promote and encourage the improvement and development of the industry, commerce and export trade of New Zealand. In addition the Department may, from time to time, be called on to carry out functions and duties under direction from the Minister. Ministerial portfolios relating to the functions of Trade and Industry are those of Trade and Industry, Overseas Trade and Marketing, Regional Development, Consumer Affairs and (from 1 January 1988) Telecommunications. The appointee will be required to lead the Department through a period of ongoing change in the public sector environment. The placement of the Department’s trade policy and trade promotion functions is under review and there have been recent additions to the Secretary’s management responsibilities, namely the administrative responsibility for the Ministry of Consumer Affairs and management of the new Radio Frequency Service which transferred to the Department following the reorganisation of the Post Office.
