Democracy
Sir, —On this anniversary of Lincoln’s Gettysburg address, government of the people for the people by the people might not have completely perished from, this Earth, but it is in bad shape from morbidity of the immune systems. Britain’s democracy is circumscribed by the virulent Official Secrets Act, while America, with a bad run of presidents, bullies' the rest of the world. Fiji is ruled by the gun, and our Government, trembling when the democratically elected Parliament was toppled by violence, snubbed Bavadra but plays footsie with the traitorous Rabuka regime. Domestically, we have the rejection by the Labour hierarchy of the party and trade union members who gave them power. I remember much talk 60 years ago of the right of recall as Labour policy for members of Parliament who failed their electors. The list of those who, qualify as delinquents grows daily. — Yours, etc., V ARIAN J. WILSON. November 19,1987.
