Hyde Park housing

Sir,—Would the Housing Corporation please explain why there is no control over how the developers are disposing of sections in the above block? As the land was given to develop at no cost to the taxpayer, with sections as payment, plus exchange land for Housing Corporation housing, why are developers allowed to auction them to prevent the average home buyer from building in this area? Where will the area set aside for Housing Corporation rental homes be and when will building begin?— Yours, etc., P. HUDSON. November 12, 1987.

[The rental housing manager of the Housing Corporation in Christchurch, Mr C. E. Consedine, replies: “The writer correctly states that payment for this development has been by progressive transfer of sections. What the developer then does with these is beyond the corporation’s control. It is accepted that the value of the section is such

that any proposition would be beyond the financial resources of average home buyers. However, the corporation has modestly priced sections in another subdivision that has been developed especially with average home buyers in mind. There are several areas throughout the development that could be utilised for rental housing purposes, but with markedly increased section values it might be more beneficial to obtain the required units in other more modestly priced areas. The options are constantly being evaluated.”]
