‘Wrong’ for N.Z. to abandon Fiji

Political reporter

The Leader of the Opposition, Mr Bolger, yesterday pointed to future recognition of the Fijian Government. It would be quite wrong for New Zealand to abandon Fiji or adopt an isolationist policy, he said. The Fijian Government was a fact, and New Zealand retained a High Commission there. It was understandable that New Zealand had not yet recognised the Government there, Mr Bolger said.

Asked about his own policy towards Fiji, he

said he regarded the Government there as a de facto one, “but I do not doubt that will move.”

Neither his own meeting, nor that of the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Mr Marshall, with the Fijian Minister of Foreign Affairs, Mr Bole, should be taken to confer recognition.

Mr Bolger said he had met Mr Bole to find out about recent events first hand, to get his reaction to criticism of civil rights there, and to discuss the programme for a return to democracy.
