Rabuka trims size of Army
NZPA-AAP Suva Colonel Sitiveni Rabuka has begun reducing the size of Fiji’s Armed Forces.
The Head of the Gov-
ernment and the security forces said he was looking at an over-all future strength of about 3000 regulars, several hundred less than at the time of the first military coup in May. Colonel Rabuka was speaking in a Fijian-lan-guage Interview on Radio Fiji. The Army has grown to more than 5000 since the first coup, but many have stepped up from the reserves and territorial force. Reliable sources said a number of veterans in their 50s and 60s, called up for service after the first coup, now were being demobilised. Colonel Rabuka said he was also looking into the possibility of recruitingjvomen into the security‘‘forces in the t&w year.
