The 1988 Air New Zealand Stakes, to be run on February 27, will carry prize money of $200,000, an increase of $25,000. Announcing this increased sponsorship yesterday, the airline said the Air New Zealand Stakes retained its position as New Zealand’s richest weight-for-age race, ensuring that top class horses would be attracted to the event. This is the twelfth season Air New Zealand has sponsored the event at Ellerslie and it has become one of the great racing spectacles on the New Zealand racing calendar. A notable list of winners includes Balmerino (1977), Le Mer (1979), McGinty (1983 and 1984), The Filbert (1985), Bonecrusher (1986) and Tidal Light, which won this year. The other feature race at the meeting, the 2000 m Lindauer Stakes for three-year-old fillies, has also had its prize money lifted and will now carry $85,000 in stake money. The Rolls Royce or-
ganisation will again be one of the sponsors on Air New Zealand Stakes day, it was announced at a seminar in Auckland yesterday. -
