Rubber at record
NZPA-Reuter Colombo Fear of A.I.D.S. has helped boost rubber prices to record highs in Sri Lanka, industry officials said. They said sheet rubber prices hit record levels in Colombo last week partly because of rising world demand for condoms and surgical gloves to shield wearers against the deadly Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome. At the Colombo auction, best sheet rubber fetched an average 21.45 rupees (SNZI.O7) per kg, compared to 17 rupees (91c) in October last year. It was the highest price on record.
