Air pollution

Sir,—lt is tempting, but not really acceptable, to argue from the particular to the general. Peter Toynbee (October 5), whom I know personally, did dot get asthma in Christchurch, but in his home town, Timaru, so he will know as well as most other people how complex the causes of respiratory diseases are. Some say that coal smoke benefits their breathing; others have to leave Christchurch because of it, which is bad publicity; others find drugs that protect them adequately. Those who cannot venture but appear in no-one’s statistics. No-one can sensibly accept the conclusions of ivoiry tower academics over real experience, as some respiratory physicians will testify. Considering the growing emphasis on air quality, any move that could make winter air pollution worse would no longer be tolerated, either by local authorities or citizens. — Yours, etc., JANET R. HOLM, President, N.Z. Clean Air Society. October 5,1987.
