Law Society

Sir,— Although Mr Richie (October 3) may be justified in claiming that Sue Hunt’s ignorance is disconcerting to him, it is worth noting that ignorance of the role of the Law Society is as much the fault of the lawyers themselves as it is of the ignorant. Even though he has set us

straight on the figures and outlined a function of the LaW Society, Mr Richie is unable to avoid the conclusion that most lawyers are not motivated to take a positive position on the proposed Bill of Rights. As one Law Conference speaker pointed out, the dominant trait of lawyers is their “passive ambivalence” (October 3). I consider that lawyers have traditionally avoided the discussion of the role of their craft in society. When Sue Hunt questioned that role she was chastised for not knowing what has probably not been adequately explained. — Yours, etc., :

PETER CARTER. October 3, 1987.
