High country fine wool in Timaru offering

The Timaru offering contained the first major selection this season of South Canterbury high country fine wools. Brokers reported the Merino and Halfbred wools as being of good colour, sound and well-grown, although some Halfbreds were showing signs of colour. The top price in the Timaru catalogue was 1420 c (74.8) for four bales of 18.2 micron Merino from D. W. Williamson (Duntroon), followed by 1370 c (74.6) for five bales of 19.2 micron from Omahau Partnership (Twizel).

Omahau Partnership received also 1350 c (74.6) for three bales of 18.9 micron, and 1242 c (70.8) for four bales of 19.2 micron clothing Merino.

Grant Brothers (Geraldine) sold three bales of 18.1 micron woolly Merino hogget at 1340 c (69.9) and four bales of 19 micron wether at 1312 c (66.1), while Hurstlea Farm (Hakataramea Valley) received 1137 c (70.8) for five bales of 19.4 micron woolly hogget. Glenmac station (Duntroon) sold six bales of 20.1 micron two-tooth at 1135 c (74.4), and Mt Florence Farm (Hakataramea Valley) sold eight bales of 19.5 micron at 1150 c (67.9). Other good Merino prices included 1097 c (72.1) for five bales of 19.9 micron from H. and R. Lory (Otakaike), 1068 c (72.9) for six bales of 19.9 micron clothing from Simons Pass station (Lake Pukaki), and 1086 c (71.4) for three bales of 19.8 micron two-tooth from Fettercairn, Ltd (Kurow). Among Halfbred prices were seven bales of woolly hogget from Island Cliff Farm (Oamaru) at 742 c (76.3) and another line of seven bales from the same vendor at 540 c (80.1). B. W. Aubrey (Twizel) received 658 c (68.5) for four bales of Halfbred and 525 c (68.9) for five bales, M. D. and M. C. Studholme (Waimate) sold

four bales of two-tooth at 616 c (70.3), and L. R. Scott (Albury) sold five bales of woolly hogget at 535 c (76.8).

Other leading Halfbred prices included 531 c (76.8) for 24 bales from F. S. McAtamney (Geraldine), 531 c (76.9) for five bales of woolly hogget from R. D. Ewart (Oamaru), 529 c (76.2) for 12 bales from R. A. Rayne (Fairlie), and 517 c (75.3) for eight bales of two-tooth from J. B. Murray (Lake Tekapo).

Corriedale reached 512 c (72.1) for five bales of woolly hogget from R. J. Powell (Waimate), and 507 c (76.5) for nine bales of two-tooth from Mcßae Enterprises

(Waimate). Fifteen bales of crossbred woolly hogget from R. J. and P. A. Clouston (Albury) made 531 c (82.6), and nine bales of Romney woolly hogget from A. P. and M. K. Bean (Ashburton) sold at 522 c (82.1). J. and M. Gregan (Geraldine) received 520 c (85.5) for 14

bales of Romney, and H. P. MCKercnar (Cannington) was paid 519 c (84.4) for 27 bales of crossbred. Eight bales of crossbred second-shear from J. J. and R._ M. Lake (Mayfield) made 501 c (86.1). Coopworth prices included 497 c (82.5) for seven bales of shorn hogget from N. E. Palmer, Ltd (Temuka), 497 c (84.2) for 11 bales of shorn hogget from R. L. Weir (Oamaru), and 496 c (81.4) for seven bales from Tayler

and Sons (Temuka). Among Perendale sales were five bales of shorn hogget from A. R. and J. H. Chisholm (Beautiful Valley) at 521 c (87.2), and five bales of two-tooth from Estate M. A. Page (Fairlie) at 517 c (85.3).

The order of the Timaru catalogue was: Pyne Gould, Guinness 164 lots, 1721 bales; Wrightson Dalgety 474 lots, 4427 bales; total 638 lots, 6148 bales.
