Baby born after accident
PA Palmerston North A Hastings woman gave birth to a son in Palmerston North Hospital only hours after her husband and sister-in-law died after a two-car accident near Shannon. Mrs Karen Magill, aged 26, was yesterday in a satisfactory condition in Memorial Hospital, Hastings. The authorities would give no details about the baby’s condition. Those killed in the accident, at 9.45 a.m. on Wednesday, were
Kent McGill, aged 30, the driver of one car; and Susan Chambers, aged 38, of Motueka, his sister. Two other passengers in the same car were taken to Memorial Hospital. Russell Thomas Gardner, aged 28, of Blenheim, was reported in a serious condition, and has since been transferred to Wellington Hospital. John, Robert Gardner, aged 60, of Havelock North, was treated and discharged. The occupants were
driving north from Wellington Hospital, where Mr John Gardner’s wife had just died.
The driver of the other car, Ms Julie Edwards, aged 23, of Palmerston North, was uninjured.
Emergency services, including ambulances and fire brigades from Palmerston North, Shannon and Levin attended the accident scene, on a straight stretch of State highway 57 near Okuku Road, betwen Shannon and Tokomaru.
