Priorities listed
The social environment has been scheduled for priority by the Ministry for the Environment, according to its briefing papers.
In listing new environmental issues, the papers said that the social science capability of the Ministry would be central to its ability to deal with them. New issues concerned pollution, waste disposal and the management of toxic substances — including toxic chemicals, the use of pesticides and herbicides, and irradiation technology.
There was an increasing focus on the quality of the urban environment; the rural community was experiencing big changes as a result of environmental, economic and social policy initiatives. The wider ramifications of these changes required a careful monitoring of the urban and rural environments in which they were , occurring, the papers said.
