Fewer jobless in Chch

The number of jobless in the Christchurch area fell 156 during August compared with the previous month, according to the latest figures from the Labour Department. There were 8959 unemployed in the area — which includes Rangiora and Ashburton — in August, down from 9115 during July. Unemployment increased slightly in Woolston and Beckenham in Christchurch City, but the rest of the city’s districts all fell.

Those employed on partly subsidised work dropped 39, while 11 jobless people were placed in employment by the Labour Department. The number of jobless rose 23 in Ashburton to 448 during August and rose 12 in Rangiora to 867. The level of jobless school-leavers in the region fell 24 to 356. The biggest drop in jobless school-leavers was in Rangiora which dropped 13 from 21 during the previous month. There were 6270 jobless men in the region during August and 2689 jobless women.

The number of jobless on training courses dropped 195 during August, mainly because of the end of courses at Christchurch Polytechnic. Numbers fell from 930 in July to 735 during August.
