Soccer sacking

NZPA-AFP Barcelona Barcelona fired its English manager Terry Venables yesterday in a move to infuse new life into the Spanish soccer giant that has lost three of its first four games in the Spanish league, Spanish national radio reported. The radio said a small group of Barcelona directors made the decision after a midday meeting with the 44-year-old Londoner and former Queens Park Rangers’ manager, who was said to be the highest-paid football boss in the world. The radio said the club had not officially confirmed the decision. Mr Venables led Barcelona to the 1984-85 Spanish league title in 1984 in his first season

after replacing Argentine Cesar Luis Menotti. Mr Venables’ replacement is tipped to be Luis Aragones, former trainer of Athletico Madrid. There has been Fleet Street speculation that Mr Venables would attempt to buy the English first division club West Ham United if his reign at Barcelona ended.

The “Daily Mirror” said he had put his hometown team at the top of the list of English clubs he wanted to purchase. Next in line, the newspaper revealed, were second division Manchester City and current English league leaders Queen’s Park Rangers, the club he guided to the F.A. Cup final and into Europe.
