KZ7 to take final bow
PA Auckland The world champion 12-metre yacht - KZ7 - arrived home yesterday and will undergo a refit to prepare her for a lap of honour on the Waitemata Harbour. The cruise, next month, will be the first time KZ7 has sailed in this country. The event’s timing will depend on the Royal New Zealand Yacht Squadron. The America’s Cup challenge spokesman, Mr Peter Debreceny, said: “We want to take the opportunity for all those people who followed KZ7’s progress through the America’s Cup to see it”
A ceremony will be held after the event so that the trophies won by KZ7 over the last year in Australia and Italy can be presented to the squadron. “We feel it is an historic New Zealand boat and should stay in New Zealand,” Mr Debreceny said. “It will not be racing again internationally.” KZ7*s main role will be working with Auckland University’s yacht research unit to provide technical know-how for New Zealand yachtsmen. “Things we learn from KZ7 are applicable to yachting generally,” Mr Debreceny said.
