Rosedale debut in Stakes
NZPA-AAP Sydney The imported stallion, Rosedale, will make his long-awaited Australian debut in the $200,000 weight-for-age George Main Stakes (1600 m at Randwick tomorrow. Rosedale arrived in Sydney on Wednesday morning after meeting quarantine regulations with an enforced stay in New Zealand.
The six-year-old son of Vaguely Noble is in fine order, according to Anthony Cummings, the stable manager for the trainer, Bart Cummings. "He is a lovely, tall, well proportioned galloper and has taken no harm from the flight,” Cummings said.
"He is a certain starter on Saturday and then he will fly to Melbourne but no decision has been made as to which race he will tackle next.”
Rosedale is owned by the multi-millionaire, Nelson Bunker Hunt, who
races horses throughout the world and has placed Rosedale in the care of Bart Cummings in a bid to win the sAustl,2Bs,ooo Melbourne Cup (3200 m at Flemington on November 3.
The winner of $Au5t516,863 from three wins and 10 placings from 17 starts, Rosedale was given one start in New Zealand. He finished 12th of 13 behind Sir Gerald in a 1300 metre handicap at Tauranga last Saturday. “It was a totally unsuitable race and he turned in a nice effort under the circumstances,” Anthony Cummings said. Rosedale exhibited his staying class with a win in the group one San Juan Capistrano Handicap (2800 metres) at Santa Anita in California on April 19. The top Sydney jockey, Kevin Moses, has accepted the ride on Rosedale in the George Main Stakes.
Moses has been riding in Sydney on a permanent basis since last November after returning from Ireland, where he was under contract to a leading trainer, Ted Curtain. Curtain prepares most of Nelson Bunker Hunt’s Irish horses and Moses has ridden almost 60 winners for the American oil tycoon.
