East and West
Sir,—Some correspondents are advocating socialism as the cure for all evils. Unfortunately, the socialist States of the north share several significant similarities with the West that dampen ' their appeal. They. are overwhelmingly science-orien-1 tated?;'and materialistic. STheyc have similar methods of produc--tion that have similar adverse effects on the environment Both supe&Powers are heavily de-
pendent upon nuclear-generated power. The Soviet Union’s mili-tary-industrial complex is as pervasive as its American counterpart and they both have overlooked the sovereignty of other States In pursuit of their egocentric objectives. I applaud Marx for his enlightening critique of capitalism, but query if socialism represents a true break with the past. Until individuals begin thinking with their hearts as well as their heads, and give spiritualism greater priority, people will remain in a state of disequilibrium within themselves, with each other, and with the environment — Yours, etc., TONY BANKS.
