Education.
■ Si?,—The great debate in recent years surely must have been “back to basics” or the cries for the of the three
Rs. This debate gave education an important profile. Education has now been elevated further with the portfolio of education going to the Prime Minister. Maybe the back-to-basics debate has missed the fundamental issue. Children, in becoming adults, need more than reading, writing and arithmetic. They need development of their artistic and creative abilities. Surely it is time that this country looked at a more positive, child-centred approach to education, as Dr David Mollet advocates (September 11). — Yours, etc., B. BUL. September 23, 1987.
