Directory service

Sir,—lt is reported (September 23) that Telecom is the old Post Office’s only profitable area. Perhaps some of the profit could be spent in maintaining a service which the Post Office used to provide. The old Riccarton Post Office had a supply of telephone directories covering New Zealand but, following the shift to new premises in early August, the directories were declared redundant and there is no opportunity to look up an address in Tauranga or Westport. No doubt Telecom would say that telephone numbers are no longer a function of the Post Office. As so often happens under the guise of efficiency, good will goes down the drain. — Yours, etc., JAMES STONE. September 23, 1987.
