The day in Parliament
PA Wellington Parliament sat at 2 p.m. yesterday. Six petitions were presented. Three, tabled by the Member for Clutha, Mr R. McD. Gray (Nat) asked for legal status to be given to the unborn child. The petitions were from John Patrick Mills and 25 others, Gregory Augustine Browne and six others, and Shane Barry Mills. Mr A. R. Wallbank (Lab., Gisborne) presented a petition from Catherine May Lowe and 284 others of the Gisborne rural community calling on the Government to ensure harsher penalties for
sexual offenders. A petition from R. A. King and 99 others, tabled by Mr J. P. Anderton (Lab., Sydenham) called on the House to recommend that any application for an irradiation plant in New Zealand be declined. Mr Kenneth Shirley (Lab., Tasman) presented a petition from lan Burson and others asking for the Rai Valley Post Office to continue in its present manner. Annual reports tabled were: Birkenhead Licensing Trust, Board of Trustees of the National Art Gallery, National Museum and National War Memorial, Clean Air Council, Department of Labour, Mataura Licensing Trust, New Zealand Export-Import Corporation,
New Zealand Film Commission, New Zealand Lottery Board, Standards Council, State Services Commission, Wellington South Licensing Trust, Winston Churchill Memorial Trust Board, Con? sumer Council, and the Abortion Supervisory Committee. Annual reports of the Law Commission for the years ended March 31, 1986, and 1987 were tabled. Eighteen questions were answered. A general debate was conducted. The Wellington Harbour Board and Wellington City Council Vesting and Empowering Bill passed through its third reading. Parliament adjourned for dinner at 5.01 p.m.
