First S.I. talks on dangerous goods

The first South Island conference of dangerous goods inspectors was held in Christchurch recently, 15 inspectors from as far afield as Queenstown and Nelson attending. An inspector for the Christchurch City Council, Mr Jack Travis, said that the New Zealand Institute of Inspectors of Dangerous Goods was formed last year, and the regional seminars were now looking at improving communications and gaining conformity between local authorities. As well as looking at the Dangerous Goods Act, 1974, the Christchurch conference discussed safety measures being taken by major industries, and the use and storage of liquefied petroleum gas. The national assistant chief inspector of dangerous goods and explosives, Mr Geoff Persens, of Wellington, gave an address, while members of the Labour Department in Christchurch also attended. Another national conference will be held next year, and there are plans to hold two South Island meetings each year.
