Compton wins at Sha Tin

By

NZPA

staff correspondent TIM DONOGHUE Hong Kong The New Zealand jockey, Bruce Compton, wasted little time in riding a winner on the opening day of the 1987-88 Royal Hong Kong Jockey Club season at Sha Tin on Saturday. Compton, who won the 1980-81 New Zealand jockeys’ championship, is under contract to the Australian trainer, John Moore, in Hong Kong. The new combination took the second race of the new season with the topweight, Rafferty’s Rules. A useful performer in his initial seasons in New Zealand, Rafferty’s Rules returned odds of better than 10-1 for a win and near 4-1 for a place. The eight-year-old gelding scored impressively from Good Boy in a class

five sprint. Compton has ridden in Australia for the last six seasons and Saturday’s meeting was his first experience of racing in Hong Kong. He has previously ridden in Mauritius, India, Singapore, Malaysia and Thailand. Moore said he approached Compton in July last year and asked him to ride in Hong Kong during the 1986-87 season. "He was unavailable but I am lucky to get him this season. Bruce is a senior rider. He'is a professional,” said Moore who has been in Hong Kong for 16 years. Meanwhile, another New Zealand jockey, Bobby Vance, has returned to Hong Kong for the new season. On Saturday Vance, the 1978-79 champion New Zealand jockey, could not add to the 36 winners he rode in the colony last season.
