Bid to block trash
Swinging booms to catch debris will be installed on trial to help reduce rubbish accumulating in a loop of the Avon River at Kerrs Reach, the development and construction committee of the Christchurch Drainage Board has recommended. The committee recommended that $4OOO be set aside in next year’s estimates for booms, and priority be given to their construction. A boom would be sited near the north footbridge and would prevent rub-
bish entering the loop from the main river, but would allow rubbish in the loop to leave with the tide. ■ • ”2 Depending on results a similar boom may be installed at the southern end. The committee plans also to ask neighbouring residents if they would be interested in being river wardens in an effort to eliminate dumping. The Christchurch City Council will be asked also if it can provide more rubbish bins in the area.
