New frigates

Sir, —I can agree with two points in V. J. Wilson’s letter (September 18), namely the lack of need for New Zealand to buy four expensive frigates, and the possibility of refugees from the Northern Hemisphere after a northern nuclear war. I do disagree with his other statements, such as our “turning tail” during the Fijian coup. Our Government showed great foresight, as New Zealand’s military intervention in Fiji could have proved to be our own “Vietnam.” In order to maintain the Bavadra Government in power, we would have needed of occupation.

The people who now criticise the Soviet Union for invading Afghanistan would have had similar grounds for condemning New Zealand. A military solution would have been no solution at all.—Yours, etc., MARGARET BLACKER. ‘ September 18, 1987.
