Kangaroos become European concern
NZPA-AFP Strasbourg The E.E.C. Parliament has asked the Community’s 12 member States to use all possible means to convince Australia of a responsibility for protecting tropical forests and the kangaroo. The resolution, submitted by a Dutch Socialist, Hemmo Muntingh, noted that of the 48 species of kangaroo originally recorded in Australia, six have become extinct and at least 13 have become scarce during the last 200 years.
The assembly said hunting for commercial purposes was the main threat to Australian kangaroos, and urged provisions of the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species be extended in the E.E.C. to take in imports of kangaroo meat or hides. In two reports, a halt was urged to exploitation of mineral wealth in Antarctica and it was emphasised that uncontrolled exploitation of some fish stocks had depleted dangerously the numbers of several species.
