Federation caps off decentralisation
The appointment of two industrial officers rounded off the Distribution Workers’ Federation’s decentralisation, said the national secretary of the federation, Mr Paul Kimble. He said the federation, which represents 60,000 workers in retailing road transport, and warehousing, began decentralising in 1986. The federation now had representation in Auckland, Wellington, and Dunedin. Mr Kimble said that Mr Henry Stubbs, formerly national secretary of the Tramway-Workers’ Union, had been appointed to the Wellington office and Mr Chris Trotter, a former secretary of the Otago Trades Council, had been
appointed in Dunedin. The appointees had broad experience in the trade union movement and research skills which would enable them to service the affiliated unions well, he said. “Appointment of the industrial officers is the final step in our preparation for this year’s award round. The Distribution Workers’ Federation now has a highly effective communications system between its affiliated unions.
"We anticipate that the industrial officers will create a regional identity for the federation. They will also forge closer links between unions across all of the industries represented.”
