RALLYING
Roger Townshend continued his recent run of success with a win in the Autosport club’s Cockram Nissan Mount Thomas Rally-sprint on Sunday. Townshend, driving his Escort RSIBOO, covered the 3.Bkm course in spectacular style to record a winning time of 2min 23.815, narrowly defeating last year’s winner, Bruce Reid.
In the only serious incident of the day Craig Pidgeon and his co-driver, were fortunate to escape injury when their car rolled on a downhill section. The car, an Avenger, was badly damaged.

SQUASH
Christchurch finished third in the New Zealand B grade inter-district team finals which ended at the Royal Oak club, Auckland, during the week-end. The Christchurch club team was narrowly denied a place in the grand final when it was beaten, 3-2, by Mitchell Park (Wellington). In other, pool-play games Christchurch beat Hawke’s Bay-Gisborne, 4-1, and Kawaroa Park (Central), 3-1. Christchurch took third place when it beat the host club, Royal Oak, 3-1, in the play-offs. For Christchurch, Adrian Casey won all his games, 3-0. Ed Post and Fred Williams both had a three-win, one-loss record. Geoff Cotton won two of his four matches.
Hamilton won the Davis Trophy, beating Mitchell Park, 3-0, in the final.
Other placings recorded by teams representing Canterbury in the various national graded events were:— C grade, at Wanganui, Christchurch men sixth, Lancaster Park women second; D grade at Taupo, Christchurch Football men third, Christchurch Football women ninth; E grade at Christchurch, Christchurch men first, St Andrew’s women eighth; F grade at Invercargill, Christchurch men third, Lancaster Park women ninth.

TABLE TENNIS
PA Wellington Hutt Valley High School has won the 1987 secondary schools championship. Hutt Valley outplayed pupils from five other schools to win the event in Lower Hutt during the week-end. Hutt Valley won the competition by beating the second place-getter, Westlake Boys’ High School, 8-3. Otago Boys’ High School finished third. Manurewa High School was fourth, Buller High School fifth, and St Augustine’s College (Wanganui) sixth.
The winning team members were Michael Davis, Brendon Pearson, Darren Sears and Michelle White.
