Tourism potential
PA Wellington Nothing would destroy New Zealand’s tourist potential faster than an international reputation for lawlessness, said the Opposition spokesman on tourism and the police, Mr John Banks, yesterday.
Mr Banks said he was deeply disturbed to learn of the reported rape of a German tourist in Kerikeri. Police say the woman, aged 25, was tied up and raped at gunpoint on Saturday afternoon. In recent months, Canadian, American and British women were the victims of attacks, Mr Banks said.
“Each and every assault will impact quite badly for New Zealand overseas.
“New Zealand will soon develop a reputation overseas as a most beautiful country, but one where visitors should be very wary of the desperate people on the streets.”
