Genuine Honey surprises at QEII meet

Genuine Honey caused a surprise when she easily defeated the red hot favourite, Magic Command, in the Blenheim Road Motor Inn Stakes, at the Christchurch Greyhound Racing Club's meeting at Queen Elizabeth II Park yesterday. Three of Canterbury’s best performed greyhounds in recent seasons, Genuine Honey, Magic Command and Club Captain, provided spectators with an exciting battle throughout the 560 m event, when the lead chopped and changed with regularity. Club Captain, which has been a dismal failure in his last three starts, set the early pace with Genuine Honey close by. Magic Command, which joined issue leaving the straight, copped a slight check and was forced wide, but soon joined issue again before taking a narrow lead down the back. As the three leaders rounded the home bend the two black dogs were locked together, but Genuine Honey managed to slip through on the rail to put the winning break on her rivals.

Club Captain appeared to have third position short of the line, but he came with a renewed effort to snatch second off Magic Command on the line.

Genuine Honey which had her chances ruined in the South Island final of the Arnott Harper Sprint series, when she was taken out at the first turn, must now be on-course for a second New Zealand championship title in early November. The Henry Richardstrained brindle bitch showed real courage to fight off two of the best greyhounds in commission at the moment, and added the Robinson Rosebowl which was attached to the race to her already good collection of trophies. Punters were right on the mark when the well supported Wild Irishman duly obliged in the $lOOO maiden feature, the Mitre Tavern Lyttelton Stakes. The Ray Adcocktrained dog led throughout from box No, 1, and continued to open up his lead throughout the journey. The son of A Nice Bee—Matagouri Bub looks like he will make his way through the grades in a short time. Call Me Early came with a strong late run to take second off Wingatui Rose which had been in second place throughout. Wingatui Rose and the fourth runner Wings and Bolts also come from the Adcock kennels. Weather fine; track firm FERRYMEAD TAVERN STAKES $4OO, C2; 330 m 1- KNIGHT CLUB 2 (J. and K. Kindle and F. L. E.
