PA Wellington A section on A.I.D.S. and sexually transmitted diseases is being included in a resource kit by the Education Department for schools teaching the health syllabus.

The latest "Education Gazette” says the Health Department has also produced a resource booklet for teachers which will be sent to schools early this term.

The Education Department has already issued a circular to schools giving guidance on problems arising from a case of A.I.D.S. in the school community. Advice on legal aspects and on appropriate hygiene procedures is included.

during A.I.D.S. Awareness Week, it was likely that teachers would be asked specific questions about A.I.D.S. and related matters.

While it was illegal for anyone in a school to direct or persuade a student under 16 to use any contraceptive, it was permissible for a person authorised under the Contraception, Sterilisation and Abortion Act to give instruction in the use of contraceptives to students under that age. A teacher approved by the principal of a school after agreement has been given by the board of governors or the school committee is authorised under the act to give such Information.
