Call for halt to bore closings
By

The new Minister of Energy, Mr Butcher, who has been overseas, has been asked to refrain from taking any further action on geothermal bore closings in Rotorua. He has' been approached by the local member of Parliament, Mr Paul East (Nat.), and the Mayor of Rotorua, Mr John Keaney, to discuss
the issue. Mr East said the Government’s programme of closing all bores within a I.skm radius of Whakarewarewa was causing widespread hardship in Rotorua and appeared to be contrary to assurances the Government had given to the High Court.
Every application for the use of geothermal energy within the zone had
been declined in spite of Government assurances that there would be no blanket prohibition. The Government had refused to disclose the criteria on which the applications for bore licences had been declined, he said. It would be wise for the Minister to refrain from forcing any more bore closings until the issues had been resolved, Mr East said.
