Winning trend expected to continue

Special correspondent Wellington The 1987-88 racing season has been one filled with reward for the Palmerston North rider, Noel Harris. With the season barely a month old, Harris has won three major three-year-old races and one weight-for-age event and the trend could continue two-fold at the Hawke’s Bay Jockey Club’s meeting at Hastings today when he rides Higgins in the $45,000 Okawa-Paramount Hawke’s Bay Guineas (1400 m and Secret Seal in the $45,000 Ormond Stakes (2000 m In a day that promises to be full of quality racing, the $45,000 Cavanagh Stakes for fillies, the first of 10 in the Wrightson “Filly of the Year” series, and the $9OOO Hastings Two-Year-Old are other major drawcards. Higgins has given Harris one of his three three-year-old events, the Taranaki-Wanganui Guineas, a race he won with style from Reception and Satisfy, both among his opponents today.

The other two both came on Poetic Prince, at Foxton and, last Saturday, at Te Rapa. * : With his two big wins Poetic Prince has established himself as the eariy two-' year-old star, but Higgins, on his Wanganui run, is not much inferior. He has only won twice, the other success was at Trentham 11 months ago, but even an outside draw here should not prevent him from showing his best Reception has not raced since his Wanganui second. He was to have appeared oh~Saturday, but he has still managed to get the work in. Satisfy contested the Tim Rogers Stakes and finished well back. He might be better placed among his own class. Silver Leopard, a maiden winner at Wanganui 10 days ago, Festal, Dalpic, Chad and Sound Belt have all indicated talent in previous runs. Sound Belt failed to flatter in the Wanganui Guineas, but with a fifth at Levin in open class, he, at least, deserves another chance. .
