Rental policy for review
PA Wellington The Housing Corporation will examine aspects of its rental policy affecting those earning more than $296 net a week, as a result of a meeting between Porirua rent strikers and corporation officials. The corporation’s acting Director-General, Mr Don Cattanach, said yesterday the meeting agreed that the new market-related rent-fixing formula was hurting some people. But he said 80 per cent of State house tenants earned below the average wage and paid a maximum increase of $l5 on their former rents. The remaining 20 per cent were the ones affected. Those earning above $296 net a week wbuld pay either the marketrelated rent applicable to their house or an incomerelated rent, whichever was the lower. The Porirua rent strike spokesman, Mr Tony Allen, said that the 20 per ;; cent ; represented 12,000 . tenants and their dependants. The strikers wanted !.' a limit on all State house : rent rises like the $lO limit previously applied.
