Pukekohe workouts
Special correspondent Auckland Lord Lenny’s dashing workout at Pukekohe on Thursday proved he is ready to resume racing this season on a high note at Alexandra Park this evening. The attractive Lordship five-year-old will be having his first race since May 1 in the Gentry Lodge Whata Baron Handicap, the first leg of the T.A.B. double at the Auckland meeting. All has not been plain sailing this week, however, for his trainer, Owen Purdon.
Purdon returned from the Claudelands meeting, last Monday night to find Lord Lenny suffering badly with colic.
“At the time it was doubtful whether we would line him up on Saturday,” said Purdon. “We were walking him around until 2 a.m. and had the vet, Don Alexander, come out to have a look at him.
“We were going to work him on Tuesday morning, but he didn’t seem bright at all, so we just jogged him and gave him some swimming in Wally Francis’ pool.
“It was a case of waiting to see how he worked this morning to see if he would be all right.
