Lord Lenny chasing two wins

Special correspondent Auckland

Lord Lenny has a great chance to gain one of the two wins needed to quality for the New Zealand Cup in November when he contests the feature event at Alexandra Park this evening. His trainer, Owen Purdon, has said that a trip south to Addington for the Toyota-sponsored cup is “on” should the brilliant gelding achieve the necessary wins to quality. Lord Lenny advanced to a C 8 assessment last season, winning eight of his 12 starts — the first seven while trained by Alan Scobie at Winton.

Away from racing since May 1, when he finished a gallant third to Keystone Surprise and Stirling Counsel in the Cambridge Gold Cup, Lord Lenny will begin from the inside on the front this evening. Lord Lenny has looked impressive in training recently and a bold effort can be expected, in spite of some difficulties with colic earlier this week.

The gelding will receive a 30-metre start from Placid Victor, which looks his main rival in the Gentry Lodge-Wata Baron Handicap, over 2700 m. Placid Victor could hardly have been more impressive when a close third to Takitimu Vance and Master Vance in the Epiglass Cup last Friday, after starting from the backmark of 50m.

To get within a neck of the winner, in what was his first race for almost seven months, was a fine achievement. Sandy Purdon, who trains Placid Victor at Pukekohe and regular attendant, Steven Reid, have been pleased with the horse this week and expect an even better effort.

Such a rugged campaigner as Placid Victor should never be under-estimated and Lord Lenny will have to be on his best behaviour to win.

Takitimu Vance responded well for Tony Herlihy last Friday and sneaked through to score narrowly but well. Peter Wolfenden, back driving after a bout of influenza, will drive Takitimu Vance this evening. Michele Bromac broke badly and lost all chance at Alexandra Park last Friday and did well to finish as close as she did (ninth). Haybumer and Levendi, fourth and fifth respectively last Friday, can also be relied upon to perform ably, but Lord Lenny’s undoubted class could be the telling factor. Jetbet: 6 Race 1 TF 6.10 L. W.
