South Africa
Sir,—Mr Lange is unable to produce one valid reason for supporting sanctions against South Africa, and denying New Zealand sales of methanol to that country. The Labour Government is well aware that sanctions please the communists, hurt the South African blacks, take jobs away from New Zealanders and achieve nothing but contempt and ill will towards New Zealand from the Western world. The methanol plant is a very successful National Government “thinkbig” project, particularly because of the security in liquid fuels it now affords New Zealand, at a time when the Middle East oil is in jeopardy. This distinct possibility was widely discussed when the project was originally announced. It seems the Labour Government has no concern for people with coloured skins, and even less for the New Zealand worker. — Yours, etc., BERT WALKER. July 28, 1987.
