NZPA-Reuter Sondrio The death toll in floodhit northern Italy rose to 44 as search teams abandoned hope of finding alive any of 27 people missing in a landslide. Officials in Sondrio, the main town in the river Adda valley disaster area, said all 27 were now presumed killed by millions of tonnes of rock and mud which thundered down a mountainside last week.
