Schools object to irradiation plant
PA Auckland Children at more than 120 primary and intermediate schools could be affected by the transport of radioactive material to a proposed irradiation plant, say the Auckland Education Board.
The board, lodging objections to the Ansell Steritech proposal at the Manukau City Council town planning hearings, said 126 board-controlled schools were between Auckland port and the proposed Mangere site. Nearly 40 were close to the suggested transport routes and three schools were within a I.skm radius of the proposed plant site.
The Education Board’s planning officer, Patricia Walsh, said the board wanted the application refused and then reconsidered when the Government committee on irradiation technology reported back with policy recommendations in September. Other objectors were the New Zealand NuclearFree Zone Committee, Campaign for Nuclear Disarmament, Women Acting for Nuclear Disarmament, Women’s International League for Peace and Freedom, West Auckland Pest Group, Womenline, the Environmental Defence Society, Manukau Harbour Protection Society, and Huakina Development Trust.
