Australia closes barely steady

NZPA-AAP Sydney The Australian sharemarket closed barely steady yesterday as support for selected industrials largely offset profit taking among gold and resource stocks. Brokers said a slight dip in bullion prices to 5U5454.30/ 80 an ounce from $U5455.00/ 50 in Hong Kong on Saturday prompted selling among mining scrip, dragging the market down in early trade. However, a late flurry of buying in the industrial sector saw it finish just off Friday’s record close.

Turnover was a heavy 120.27 million shares worth sAust2sl.93M and rises just outnumbered falls.

Investors continued to focus on the Elders IXL stable following speculation the company will announce a major restructuring. The stock Improved 10c to 524 on steady demand as associated company AFP Investments, Ltd, which put forward the restructuring proposals, rose 8c to 360 and shareholder SA Brewing 5c to 395. Bell Group, which along with Elders holds a large stake in BHP, was steady at 890. However, uncertainty as to how the restructuring may affect BHP saw the stock fall 10 to 1045.

Other industrials to lose Included Fairfax, down 18 to 506 on profit taking following Friday’s gains, and Goodman Fielder, 15 lower at 470. TNT was up 26c at 560 on strong turnover as News Corp rose 20c to 2050.

A slight fall in bullion prices saw selected gold stocks sold down. 20c losses took Renison to 1230, Sons of

Gwalia to 1330 and Kidston to 810.
