estimated to contain up to 60 million barrels of oil. The Kupe South-2 well, which was drilled earlier this year, discovered a 90metre tall hydrocarbon column at a depth of about 3000 m. It is now known about 60 metres of that column contains hydrocarbons in production quantities. The first well was drilled in the Kupe South field, about 33km south of Hawera, late last year by New Zealand Oil and Gas. NZOG and Oil Fields NL have a 30 per cent interest in licence area PPL 38116.
The rig, presently in Port Taranaki, drilled the
first two Kupe South wells late last year an<| earlier this year. The exact locations of the next two wells are not yet decided, an industry spokesman said.
Further meetings of the joint venture technical and operations committees are planned next month, either in Wellington or Sydney.
The technical committee is expected to recommend the best sites for further evaluating the field’s hydrocarbon-bear-ing potential and the operations committee to authorise the extra expenditure.
