Winners and losers
Sir,—l am heartily sick of the mindless devotion to competition which has become part of our way of life. Even the Labour Party now extols it as a cure for the country’s problems. Of course, in sport and games competition is necessary, even great fun, but when it is applied to the serious things of life it does real harm. In our daily grind we should be co-operating to create a more just society where all can enjoy the good things of life. Competition, by its very nature, means that there are winners and losers and yet. we do not even start the race from the --■4-
same position. I question whether one should have to’work twice as long and hard as another who has more intellect or cunning. It is obnoxious that civilised human beings should compete for survival. — Yours, etc. * EVAN WILLIAMS. July 22, 1987.
