Unpaid fines
Sir, — Having read the article on non-payment of Court fines, I began to ponder about this very serious question. As the article implies, there seems to be a lack of respect for the law among a considerable number of our citizens. How to change this I do not attempt to give an opinion, but I do put forward an idea on how to collect this enormous amount of outstanding' fines. Could the powers-that-be promulgate a law which would empower the courts to obtain an order on the wages, salary, or whatever of .these people, if, say, the fine was not paid in a reasonable time? I am sure that this could be done. After all, our Government seems to be able to do most things to obtain revenue. There is S39M owing to the State in these unpaid fines. —Yours, etc.,
J. E. EDER. Rangiora, July 22, 1987.
