Children’s library

Sir,—lt is hoped that the Paparua County Council will reconsider the horrendous idea of closing the children’s section in its library. It is also hoped that the idea will not be taken up by other councils as it can be seen only as a sad, retrograde step. When the Darfleld Public Library was re-established recently, it was realised that a children’s section was one of the prime requirements. It rapidly became the main “growth area” and one of the most utilised sections. Oddly enough, schools in Malvern County have good libraries, too. Children need, and deserve, all the books they can

possibly have access to, and every encouragement to read. Such resources should be available from public, as well as school libraries. More could be said, but any forward thinking council can work it out, I am sure.—Yours, etc., ELIZABETH H. PERRIN. Darfield, July 22, 1987.
