Housing permits down a third
The number of residential building permits issued during June, 1987, in Christchurch City declined more than a third on the Previous year. The value of building authorised in the permits this June also fell 21 per cent on last year’s value. During June, 1987, residential permits were valued at $2,585,676 — a $703,536 fall on the 1986 total of $3,289,212. * The number of permits issued by City Council building inspectors fell ! last month by 12 on the previous June total of 35. ■ The greatest number of permits — 26 — was issued in the Papanui area, with Shirley next with 11. Nationally, • the same trend has shown up.
According to the Statistics department, June, 1987, building permits were issued for 1596 new dwellings, a 3.6 per cent decline on June, 1986. This followed decreases of 12.8 per cent and 16.3 per cent in May and April, 1987, respectively, .However, commercial developments given permits in June far outweighed the value of developments during the corresponding month last year. ■ - ' v - Nearly $l7 million of commercial building permits were issued last month, compared with $906,317 in June, 1986, a 16-fold increase in the value of developments. The majority of the commercial permits were issued for the central city.
