$4000 fine for bribe attempt

PA Auckland A former footwear inspector for the Government Stores Board has been fined $4OOO for attempting to obtain bribes. The maximum penalty for the offence is seven years jail. Bramwell Clement Martins, aged 48, of Bucklands Beach, had earlier admitted asking footwear companies for bribes in return for contracts to supply Government departments. Before sentence by Mr Justice Jefferies in the High Court at Auckland, Martins’ counsel, Mr Paul Temm, Q.C., said his client had nothing to be ashamed of in his past.

His fault was in giving in to a desire to get more money than he was entitled to.

If Martins went to jail, his innocent family would suffer.

It was an attempt at bribery only; he gained nothing from it and the results were disastrous for him, Mr Temm said. It was an unusual and rare offence and no deterrent was necessary.

The Judge told Martins his abilities put him into a position of trust which allowed him to behave in a corrupt way. It was an unreal atmosphere which suggested either bald effrontery or extreme naivety.
