Man on murder charge after shooting

An unemployed man, aged 31, faced a murder charge yesterday in the District Court at Nelson after the fatal shooting of a woman in a central-city house on Wednesday. The names of the man and the dead woman were suppressed in the interim by Mr Brian Yates, Justice of the Peace, after a request by defence counsel, Mr Antoni Shaw. The accused was remanded in custody to appear on Tuesday. Detective Sergeant Roy Powell, the officer in charge of the Nelson C. 1.8., said the woman, aged 26, died from a gunshot wound about 10 p.m. on Wednesday. Her body was found in the house by police who were alerted by neighbours who reported hearing rifle shots. Detective Sergeant Powell said four children were asleep in the house at the time of the shooting. No-one else was hurt A man was arrested about 16.10 p.m. after calling at the Nelson Police Station.
Detective Sergeant Powell said the police were still looking for a rifle allegedly used in the incident.
He urged anyone with any information about the firearm to get in touch with the Nelson police.
