Appeal dismissed

PA Auckland An appeal, by the connections of Go For Broke against the first placing of Godfrey in the $130,000 Benson and Hedges Two-Year-Old Championship Stakes at Alexandra Park on June 20, was dismissed on Wednesday. Go For Broke finished second, three lengths behind Godfrey, but owners of the former horse protested, claiming that interference by Godfrey, with about 200 m to run cost him a winning chance. The Auckland Trotting Club's judicial committee rejected the protest. Appeal Judges Messrs E. Doherty, D. E. Hooper and R. Gallagher reached a similar decision. The tribunal conceded Godfrey had caused interference to Go For Broke but in view of the ease in which the former won, there would be no alteration to the placings. The decision confirms the total of 100 winners this season for Godfrey’s trainers, Roy and Barry Purdon, although' there are still two more meetings at which they could extend their record breaking tally.
