Patient approach paying off for Hughes

Special correspondent Auckland A patient approach by the Pukekohe trainer, Brian Hughes, with regard to Vulcan Lady is beginning to reap its reward. Vulcan Lady is one of seven daughters of the Albatross horse, Vance Hanover, running in the $30,000 Caduceus Club Classic Final at Alexandra Park this evening. Inclined to pace unevenly early on, Vulcan Lady had shown steady improvement as the season progressed but not enough to warrant a start at a totalisator meeting until the middle of last month. “She took a while to get balanced,” said Hughes of Vulcan Lady yesterday. “She was inclined to go a bit roughly early on but now she’s 100 per cent.” One could scarcely disagree with Hughes’ assessment, having witnessed Vulcan Lady’s courageous front-running success in the opening heat of the Caduceus Club-sponsored series at Alexandra Park on July 3. In front from the outset, Vulcan Lady easily held the warm favourite, Precious Vance, at bay to win by a length and a quarter.
